James, I just saw a demo at the local amateur radio club. The operator
spoke into a mike and the speech was transformed into a transmitted code
while the words appeared on the screen.  I have no idea if such a
program could be made to serve your purpose. If it would be of any help
to you I would be happy to hunt up the man who gave the demo and ask.

As a memory jogger, the lady that you mentioned was Lillian Ackley (?)
As I recall, she died a couple of years ago. There were one or two folks
here at the time who were in contact with her family.  Maybe someone
here can remember who they were and put you in contact with them.
