SD> I just remembered something: On RMP, somebody said that Fripp
SD> actually taught Boz to sing and play bass. ...

M> That's apparently true. They
M> started rehearsals in late February 1971 and by April were ready to
M> play their first gigs!
What a strange story. I wonder what Wetton was doing at the time.
M> Initially, I believe Adrian Belew was concerned about joining a
M> band that he felt was musically over his head. As I understand it,
M> Robert Fripp had to talk him into joining King Crimson.
I thought _Lone Rhino_ was a pretty good album, though not as complex as the
best of KC. He has done pretty well.
SD> Still, for a world-class anal retentive like Fripp, I found it
M> Hmmm... why would you describe him that way ?.....
Fripp does a lot of weird things. It's not an insult, just an observation.
*I* do a lot of weird things. He did a best of KC called _A Young Person's
Guide to King Crimson_ which completely ignored _Lizard_ and almost ignored
_LTIA_. He deleted a guitar solo of the remaster of _Discipline_. He sits
down at every concert, usually towards the back of the stage. Etc., etc.
There is no KC on Rhino's 5 disc prog compilation, and something tells me
Fripp was involved.
M> True, it's not an unusual combination, but I think Fripp has always
M> been concerned with personal and ideological harmony as well as musical
M> harmony. He searches for the right combination of people and attitudes
M> as well as for musicianship.
Yes, but he's famous for being picky about the music, and how it is played.
David Cross got fired for showing up for gigs drunk.
M> I think most people would consider Robert Fripp to be somewhat pedant
M> and possibly a bit eccentric, but I think `anal retentive' is far too
M> negative a term to describe his particular idiosyncrasies.
I dunno. It seems to fit for me.
can't entirely
M> disagree with his theories on fostering creativity and the process and
M> performance of music.

I certainly wouldn't deny his genius, though he has his ups and downs. I
have nothing against Fripp, I just think he's a little off, like most
proggers...
