OH yeah, old hat, they been able to do that for awhile.

ARe you that naive? OFten your landline
calls go via satellite links, or terrestrial microwave, and
you can bet certain electronic spooks can tune in on them if they've a need
or desire to do so.
Then there's the sad sad fact that if I'm just a sleazy
local and I know where you live and want to I can find the
demarc box for your apartments, and with a little trial and
error and a litttle hardware available at the shack clip
onto your line at your demarcation box and listen in, and
maybe record it for later listening if I'm so inclined.
After all, those little voice recorders using a flash memory card can be
concealed pretty easy these days, and it don't
take a lot of hardware to clip onto a phone line at the
demarc box. HEck I had that one down before I reached
puberty.
Before scanners and other various pieces of radio gear were
cell phone blocked thanks to ecpa and the whiners that don't understand
that radio links are by their nature insecure
links (NEwt Gingrich anyone) I listened in on enough phone
calls, and even earlier back in the old mobile phone days.
MOst of them weren't exciting enough to bother with.
THen there was a buddy of mine who got hired by a guy to set up a receiver,
and voice activated circuitry coupled with a
recorder to listen in on his wife's conversations on an old
49 mhz cordless phone, when he believed she was stepping out on him. There
was one doctor's wife who didn't get a nice
alimony settlement .

Richard
