RW> Hard hats: depends on the industry. THe live performance
RW> industry is a mixed bag. BElieve it or not, you can see
RW> riggers up in the steel overhead at these large arenas etc.
RW> who must be belted securely, but the folks wandering around
RW> below don't have lids. Kathy and I with our remote truck
RW> are an exception. IF you're working below riggers and
RW> other such folk and you work for us you *will* put a hard
RW> hat on. YOur hard hat goes on, and your cell phone is *off*
RW> until you're on break. WE tell casual labor this.

Several decades ago I was a supervisor in the head end of a
cable TV company. One day a couple guys were working up on the
357 foot tower that brought in the local area channels.

I walked out the door and one of them dropped a wrench. I saw it
hit the ground and went back in and put on my hard hat. I had
been issued one early on, but never needed it until then.

Before that I worked on Marine Electronics on the great lakes.
Hardhats were required on deck. I boarded a boat late one day,
when it was riding very high on the water as it was empty. By
the time I got off the boat was loaded, riding low in the water,
it was dark, very bright lights were shining on the boat as I
climbed the ladder to get off, and the cables mooring the boat
were near the deck. My hard hat let me know when I reached the
 cable.

Oh, BTW, on the Great Lakes the freighters are boats. On the
ocean those same boats would be ships. Just a matter of
terminology convention. Just like submarines are boats, no
 matter how big they are.
