I have used the same technique that Bob is talking about, just pour the
dental stone over the tiles, wait for it to cure, seal the edges and back
and start grinding away.

I wanted to see if NOT cleaning the dental stone between the tiles would
result in scratches and it doesn't. I brought my surface down to 5 mic. and
not a single scratch and no suction problem either. I also make sure I used
distilled water for both my mic. powders and polishing compound.

By the way you can put the polishing pads right on the tiles after your
done grinding.

Good luck,

Dave

Actually, you have just made more work for yourself. I don't do any
cleaning of the dental stone, not even on the face of tiles before starting
grinding! The stuff on the face will quickly be removed - dental stone is
a lot softer than the tiles so it will erode away with no problems. The
only time that I will do anything to the face of the tool is when the tool
is wanting to stick due to astigmatism/sphericity problems in fine grinding
- a real warning that you're not grinding right and have problems with
astigmatism or sphericity - and then only to do a few scratches to allow
air to flow into the center area of the tool. Now that you have cut away
the support for the edges of the tiles, you will be wanting to stone them
so that the edges don't crack off and make scratches in the glass.
