    All it really is is an AC motor with a really strange congiguration.  The 
controller generates a rotating magnetic field inside the motor and the rotor 
has windings as well.
    I think they still have slip rings with brushes.  They just don't have a 
comm.  I also think that they are only used in aircraft right now.  They 
probably need the airflow since they pack a lot of watts into a small motor.
