That's exactly What I was trying to say. I mean, The Midi Programming That i
personally Like all Comes Across as Bad "Conan The Cimmerian" type of Music
or it sounds like it Belongs in an Arthurian Legend, Like some
middle Ages Gothic types of things.
If You ARE trying to get others to really LISTEN to what You are doing,
there HAs to be a Connection.
For me, It normally comes out in my Lyric content. Musically, I try to work
on things that FLOW. If the parts don't have a good Transition, then they are
"Just Parts", it's not really a song. That of course is My Persoanl Opinion.
I also tend to look at it from This Perspective. i am a drummer who also Can
play Guitar, and any of my Keyboard stuff, was most likely Written on a
Guitar. I just use a Variety of Sounds to COLOR those Notes different Colors;
the point is that, If it doesn't sound good on an Acoustic Guitar, I won't
even bother putting it into Midi.
If it can't really stand on it's own, WITHOUT Embellishment, it's not that
good to begin with.
It is just like people who are just starting out Recording- They SMOTHER
everything in Effects, or they will have their Delay Louder than the Actual
Original Sound.
I constantly try to get this point across to our Singer. All of the Guys in
my Band have 4-tracks and ART SGE mK II Effect units; then, I have an 8-Track
Home Studio, with Midi stuff as Well.
Our Singer/Bass/Keys will bring me a Tape with so much Reverb on the Drums
that it's not funny- Everything is COVERED in Effects.
He brought on over, and I just started Laughing. He was going," Why are You
laughing at my Tape", and I told Him. It was AWFUL sounding.
The Sound that He wanted for Vocals was NOTHING like What He did. I had Him
Rerecord them With Nothing but a 4-1 Compression Ratio, and it was EXACTLY
what he was After. He finally Started going for a Drier Sound, after I had
Him mix a Few Songs, and then I mixed a few Songs.
You just can't "Make" everything sound Great. That's just an Impossible
thing. So, You just have to keep on Trying till you get it where YOU like it,
and HOPE that Others will as well.
I also try to go by the "Less is More" theory.
