They're running for the tall grass because of the poll's, not because they
"realize the error of their ways.". It is not a principled
stance, by any means, but it is one I can live with for the short term as
the strategic goal over the next few months is to recapture our government
from the bottom feeders who have temporarily (hopefully) overcome it... at
least it's Executive branch. In that sense, this battle can, and perhaps
should, be fought another day.

An uncomfortably large portion of those of you on the Left tend to be
knee-jerk WH apologists with a natural sympathy for Left-leaning regimes --
no matter how tyrannical. This latest episode is particularly interesting.
Not only does it highlight that natural inclination of the Left to act in a
predictable way, but also shows the power of master propagandists to
influence even those who would, under normal circumstances, be much less
susceptible.

Among the master propagandists, Castro -- of course -- is King, closely
followed by Bill Clinton. In this particular situation, we have been
double-teamed with even many Conservatives being swayed by the "family
value's" ploy. This is a normally laudable position, but hardly the
hall-mark of those with Leftist inclinations who habitually view the
autonomy of the family unit as an enemy of their political agendas. (At
least in Communist Cuba they have the guts to admit this, writing into the
law the fact that a child is the property of the State rather than the
family.)

Does the destiny of Elian belong with his father? Of course it does so long
as he is still a child. Is his father making a free choice? We don't know.
Does Elian deserve at least as fair a shot at getting at the truth of where
his father is coming from under the circumstances and what his destiny is
likely to be if returned to Cuba as a politicized "child of the
revolution"? Most definitely, although that is not likely to happen
now.

Apart from all of this, has our government overstepped its authority in the
name of a politically popular, poll driven abuse of its power? I would say,
probably yes, but I am a realist and don't expect the truth to come out any
time soon.

However, I at least have the comfort of knowing that people such as
yourself are, as usual, unquestionably on the wrong side of this issue. No
doubt about it.
