Oh, I see what you mean.  I don't have that "luxury" on my boat. 
Since my first message, someone has told me that there are
self-contained AC units made, which can stand alone in the center of a
room.  They don't have to be vented to outdoors.  Know anything about
that?
I do like your idea though of an inexpensive home unit.  Will have to
look to see if there's any way I can incorporate your idea on my boat.
