Diaspora aims to create a federated, decentralized social network, and it's sputtered along without a lot of buzz. Diaspora was described to me as "instead of a million users on a single social network with a single TOS, imagine a million people on a million federated social networks determining exactly what they wanted to and wanted not to share. Identi.ca and Jabber make nice federated microblogging and IM environments, but without the momentum of a large user base, they're in the shadow of centralized platforms. I thought that HTML5 and Flash telnet clients would help, but people still don't want to get over the learning curve of a text interface. Maybe we need to join with the devil and make a way to federate echoes with Facebook pages? :) ...
