Mystic uses either JAM or Squish message base formats.  Any message reader
that can read those formats should be good to go.

If you are running Maximus on linux under dosemu, it should automatically be
telnetable.  Admittadly, I don't know the first thing about Maximus tho. 
Wasn't the source released under GPL?  Hasn't somebody made a linux port yet?
