For some reason, I used to think it was the opposite since heat normally
makes things thin out.

If you use 5w-40 or 10w-40, the cold morning starts would be at the 5w or
10w weight though, correct?  I would think that when it is cold outside,
the oil would still go down and cause that lifter noise on startup.

I'm not aware of a 30w-30, but that might cause other issues.
