Terry May was fondling The Chicken while saying to Mark Yoder:
MY>> I'm not saying to "ignore" it, but the Headline should be "Tiger
MY>> Destroys Field at Augusta" rather than "African-American Woods
MY>> becomes First Black Master's Champion." Let's pay homage to his
TM> I guess it depends on what rag you read. I never saw ANY headlines the
TM> day after the Masters, referring to his race. They all referred to his
TM> record-setting, dominating performance without mentioning color.
It wasn't a "literal" newspaper headline, but it was most assuredly the
underlying headline of every sports story that I saw that evening and
following Monday from everyone between my local radio news and SportsCenter.
TM> I've seen later articles that talked about his race, that might
TM> have put his color in the headlines. That's certainly
TM> understandable.
Hell, they were talking about it all through the CBS coverage...
TM> If his race wasn't talked about at all, everyone from Jesse Jackson to
TM> Al Sharpton would be ripping the media for ignoring the fact that he's
TM> African-American (at least partially :).
As I said, don't ignore the fact, just don't make it more important than the
feat.
I have no idea why Tiger refused Clinton's invitation to Jackie Robinson
Night in Shea Stadium, but if it was because he didnt' want to be used for
another racially promotive photo op by the current administration, then I
absolutely applaud the man. After all, he's more asian than he is black...
