KH>I've spent the last umpteen hours trying to undo what I somehow did.
KH>I just upgraded my machine to dual PPro board from a single Pentium
KH>chip. All drives stayed the same.
KH>I assumed (ASSumed) this would be a direct swap... but NT had other
KH>ideas.
KH>When I tried to boot the new system, I got the BSOD (ntoskrnl error)
KH>every time. I decided it was because NT uses a differnet kernel for
KH>SMP so I tried an 'upgrade' from the NT CD. Nope.
KH>Then I decided to throw caution to the wind and just reinstall...
KH>well, that worked but... while I knew I would lose all my
KH>configuration info, I had no idea that every program on the machine
KH>would forget THEIR configurations as well! For example, my Word 7
KH>was highly customized (toolbars, macros, etc.)-- All gone-- it's as
KH>if I just installed Word. Same for the rest of Office (except
KH>Schedule... everything there is intact). Same for about a dozen
KH>other programs... all to 'default' settings.
KH>Also... the upgrade remembered my RAS dialing directory but it
KH>doesn't work. I get to dial and attempt connection to my ISP, but the
KH>call is rejected (refused by remote host).
KH>You're probably asking where my tape backup is... well, both a
KH>'father' and 'grandfather' backup have an 'error reading tape'!!! I
KH>doubt the tapes have errors (??)
KH>Anyway, if anyone has any advice other than 1)format, 2)buy a Mac, or
KH>3)get a hammer, it would be greatly appreciated.
KH>Oh... my point still works (at least when my bossnode is working) :-)
Two other suggestions. Get some training on NT and make a backup before
doing these types of changes. I've done the same types of things before
on about every OS there is but learned from my mistakes that nothing is
a substitute for a good backup. The problem here wasn't NT.
