| subject: | Flat Response |
JA> I don't see that many big names in the audio business JA>talking JA>about flat response and other such "outdated" thinking and JA>goals. Just JA>bring on the doodads, gizmos, tweaks, technobabble and JA>powered subs JA>and pounding sounds below 35 MHz and we shall proclaim it JA>"Great JA>Music". JA> I have full range towers and enjoy them very much. JA>But I once JA>heard a pair of ACI Sapphire bookshelfs set up perfectly, JA>pushed by a JA>small JA>British integrated pre/amp and a $500 Marantz CD player, JA>playing JA>a chamber music CD (cannot remember title etc.) and it was JA>the JA>most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my life!!! But then JA>again JA>I have always marched to a different drummer/violin, anyway. JA> I doubt many young people have ever paused long JA>enough to JA>really listen to symphony music or anything so beautiful as a JA>stringed quartet, and realize it is possible to enjoy JA>something JA>so uncool. Its' a shame, too. They are missing so much. JA> Unfortunately too, many audio manufacturers seemed JA>headed JA>in the same direction. JA>Cheers, John JA> JA>--- Maximus/2 3.01 JA>(1:114/260) I know that's right. I may not listen exclusively to symphony but when I do, I want that sound, man. My old AR-3a speaker, converted to the now archaic 11a speakers, really get that sound for strings. But also piano (Horowitz on vinyl) and jazz sounds (Old Mingus records utilizing the the state-of-the-art RCA microphones all listed out on the album jackets) and such. "Hi-fi" was the term. I suppose my system would still be considered state-of-the-art for vinyl, no CD. I do notice vast differences wuen playing CD's as opposed to records. Records sound like the players are on a miniature stage right in front of me. CD's sound too up front, out of perspective for lack of a better term. Unfortunately for me, there just aren't enough current artists I'm interested on CD to make tremendous "upgrades" to my system. I still have 300 watts/channel if I ever need it. And the speaker clip at about 150 watt peaks. But, I know what you mean. All the standards I grew up with are now non-existent and systems are made, perhaps, for the thrill and not accuracy. Maybe "accuracy" is a nebulous term now, also. - Pedit Ver 2.2 --- GEcho 1.20/Pro (1:369/8) ---------------JA> * Origin: The Union Jack BBS, Phoenix, AZ, USA. 602-274-9921 * Origin: The CatWalk BBS Davie, Fl 305-370-3528 USR V.EveryThing |
