Of course, the other rumor is that Radio Shacks outside the US sell the same 
cellular-disabled scanners as they do in the US, even when the laws in those 
countries allow cellular scanning, just to prevent exactly what we were 
talking about.

I've lost count of how many scanners I've had, but the 2042 will be my next 
one.  Hopefully, the last one for a while.

I mostly use the built-in antenna or a magnetic mount all-band job, although 
I seldom magnetically mount it, now that I think of it.  :-)  I had one 
scanner that just wouldn't work right unless the magnetic base was grounded 
to a big flat metal surface, but none of the others seemed to care.  For a 
long time, I had it sitting on a (wooden) window ledge in my bedroom.
