Hi Dottie!
-=> Quoting Dottie Theriault to Wendy Buchanan <=-
DT> My church in North Dakota had a ladies guild that got together and
DT> made quilts for the missions. That is where my love of quilts was
DT> born. I too wish that I had paid closer attention to their
DT> crafting...I could have learned so much from them. One year I remember
I know. I wish that I'd learned some things from my gramma before
she died 18 months ago. Now it's too late.
DT> that they made over 100 quilts to send to the missions. I was working
DT> there as a Parish Secretary so only got to check in on them as the
DT> worked in our church basement. Looked like so much fun. They really
DT> had a "Quilting Bee" going (they were busy working like bees and
DT> buzzing in warm and funny chatter).
Yes, I think that's why they named them that. Over 100 in a year!
Boy, they were prolific, weren't they? Sounds like Julia!
That lady can put them out, I've heard! I'm so slow myself...
DT> love by the church ladies. Many things that I had never even thought
DT> of trying before were brought to my attention there. Rosemaling
DT> (sp?), tatting, of course there was lots of crochet and knitted items
DT> as well as hand sewing and quilting.
Ladies knew how to do those things and taught their daughters and
granddaughters in those days. By the time they were five or six,
some girls had done two or three samplers and gone on to do a quilt
for their dolls.
DT> I know just what you mean. I have a real fondness for the "Victorian
DT> Age". My dream home is to have a Country Victorian reproduction home
DT> built on the property that my grandfather homesteaded in Woodward Co.
DT> Oklahoma as soon as my husband retires.
I'm in Washington County, OK myself. Bartlesville!
DT> When we travel we always try to stay in a B&B which is preferable
DT> a old Victorian home. I love the crafts of that era. ONLY wish I
Have you ever been to Branson, MO to Silver Dollar City? A lot of
old-time crafts and things are demonstrated there and also for sale
there. It's a great place! There's a new place similar to Silver
Dollar city there, too, Mutton Hollow, and it's basically the same.
It's not too far to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and there are loads of
old shops and houses there. They have many Victorian homes and B&Bs
there, too. It sure is hilly country, though.
DT> could do them. The paper crafts especially intrigue me. It seems
DT> that they could make the most ornate items from the most simple
DT> materials. The needlepoint and crazy quilting are so beautiful. If I
DT> could have picked the timeframe here on this earth, it would have been
DT> in that era.
Except that it was a very repressive culture other than crafts!
DT> ... Welcome to my crazy quilt life!
Sounds like mine. Never a dull moment!
LadyBear Hugs,
Wendy
