Now why would they have to protect themselves from the father?  Why
would they be afraid of him?  Let's read further.

Ohhhhh, so THAT'S why they were afraid of the father.  They attempted
to kill him and botched it, so they thought he might look them up when
he recovered.  As they saying goes, ladies, "If you strike a king, kill
him."  You were right to be scared.
