It is also possible to add 'setfont' to either profile or configuration files
for apps so that any user can have customized enviroments suitable to their
needs.  For example ~/.vimrc which can contain much of the specialized
languages and character types such as utf8 multibyte or whatever 8-bit codepage
including cp437, although I wouldn't recommend doing that since it cripples a
fine and upstanding app.

Not sure about easy but definetly doable.  Also other shells besides bash but
bash is probably the best known and used as far as I have witnessed since way
back when.
