Actually, DM is very many-sided band. Once upon a time Martin Gore said
that they don't want to be clean rock-band and clean electronic band.
Although I like their guitar sound with some electronics more than their
clean electronic sound.  Such us "Ultra", some things from
"Violator" and "Sounds of faith and devotion".

BTW, I don't have their albums of 1981-83's yet. Then they just was begun...
