Unfortunately, once the choice has been made to buy instead of make, too
few businesses employ someone who knows how the product works to make the
choice of which competing product is best for the job and even fewer act on

... but although that is true, it's not relevant to the discussion. My
point was that knowing how something works allows making a better decision
on which competing product to buy.
