Actually, John, Americans have never voted a single president into office by
direct popular vote. To make my thoughts more clear in my previous statement,
what I should have said was that "Maybe we should go back to just a popular
vote, and one-man, one-vote, as some of the Founding Fathers wanted to do
since 1787." There have been a number of legislative attempts to do exactly
that since that time, but they have all failed for one reason or another. I
know that some people argue that the Electoral College is a better system, but
I am not convinced of it. There is so much room for corruption and political
favors when we rely upon an Electoral College, whereas with a direct, popular
vote, candidates are forced to go directly to the people, and really win their
confidence, and win as many votes as they possibly can. Each and every vote
has more importance and influence in a direct popular voting system, I think.
