UART is on the card that you modem cable plugs into at the computer
level...not the modem. The 16550A UART offers a 16K buffer for high speed
modems.....it help prevent data errors. I've used external modems for
years...I'l saw a lot and have NEVER saw one where the 16550s were on the
modem. On the other hand, the internal modems do....and should.
