Hi Jonathan,
On 26 Jan'97, you growled something about Cheap Batteries to Al Feyen:
JH> BTW, has anybody got any advice on
JH> whether I should discharge batteries each
JH> time I charge them, or not bother..?
I own a AT&T 3610 which is very similiar to an NEC model. The batter
that came with the phone is a standard 700MaH type. I got an extra
battery, a 1000maH type for my phone, which is a marked difference.
First of all, I make it a habit to put my phone in the charger every
time I'm back in the house for the day (with the phone off). Now, the
battery that came with the phone won't recharge. I've had it for about
a year.
Anyway, to answer your original question, the instructions on the
battery say to "season" the battery the first time it's charged, and
periodically thereafter. I have a pretty good understanding as to why,
because they behave in the same fashion as the NiCads for the two-way
radios I use at work. This is because the battery possesses a memory
that tells it when it's time for a charge, regardless of the actual
state of the battery. Try this:
Let the battery completely drain, then recharge it fully. Do NOT put it
in the charger until it is TOTALLY depleted. Repeat this procedure
twice more, then you should be all set. This procedure should be done
every few months. It's called "New battery conditioning", and seems to
work for me. Remember, your battery takes longer to charge if you leave
the phone on while in the charger.
