| subject: | Europeans Balk On Afghanistan Troops |
I was just reading a New York Times article entitled "Europeans Offer Few New Troops for Afghanistan". As the title denotes, it is regarding the less-than-enthusiastic responses that other NATO members have given to President Barack Obama's request for more troops in Afghanistan. In all, all of Europe is only willing to commit a total of 5,000 troops, 3,000 of which will only be there on a temporary basis for the upcoming election. So America sends dozens of thousands, while Europe sends its thousands. Tell me; after Bush's fiasco in Iraq, which was based upon lies, deceptions and a distortion of the facts, can you really blame the hesitancy of the Europeans? And what about the Russians? They certainly learned their lesson from their long quagmire in Afghanistan during the 1980's. It is only the USA that is stupid enough to get bogged down in an expensive, protracted guerrilla war in the dangerous mountains of Afghanistan. That is why I have stated that for all of his talking and campaign promises, in some ways, Obama is really no different than Bush. Obama may withdraw troops from Iraq -- and not even all of them -- but many of those same tired, over-extended troops will soon find themselves in Afghanistan, facing an enemy who knows the terrain much better than they do, and who has had years of experience in fighting guerrilla warfare. Obama, you are making one big mistake. Apparently you learned very little from Bush's mistakes. If you want to be a one-term president, you are certainly going down the right road. Of course, we are back to the same old war-boom-bust strategy. Continuing and expanding the Afghanistan war will get some people's minds off of the economy, it will keep some people working, and it will get some money flowing in the economy...but at what price? If after eight years, George W. Bush was unable, or unwilling, to capture Osama bin Laden, and couldn't defeat al-Qaeda and the Taliban, what makes Obama think that he can do it? Why is Obama REALLY willing to commit more troops to Afghanistan? What does he REALLY hope to accomplish? Victory? I don't think so. Afghanistan is much more difficult than Iraq.
