BA> Replying to a message of Bob Klahn to Tom Walker:
TW>>> Goofing off and poor work is like some sort of Plague
TW>>> amongst Union workers. Even the few best they may have at
TW>>> one point become infected.
BK>> Goofing off and poor work is like some sort of plague amongst
BK>> non-union workers. Union workers tend toward a much higher level of
BK>> performance.
BA> That has not been my experience.
Do you live in a RTW state? Do you have a generally low level of
worker competence? That would explain a lot.
BK>> BTW, why would you even tolerate poor work from anyone, union or
BK>> not?
BA> I don't. Some employers will in order to get labor peace.
BA> The auto workers, for instance, are (in)famous for shoddy
BA> work - especially on Mondays when they're hung over and
BA> Fridays when they're expecting the weekend off. Most auto
BA> assembly plants, for instance, have a crew at the end of
BA> the line that inspects and fixes mistakes.
Every factory I have seen has someone at the end of the line
that inspects and fixes mistakes. I started in my first factory
in 1966, in an Admiral TV factory. I was one of the crew at the
end of the line who fixed mistakes. Others did the inspecting.
BA> In 1976 I bought a brand new Dodge Aspen. I was quite
BA> happy with it until the bolt fell out of the brake linkage
BA> about two weeks after I took delivery, nobody had bothered
BA> to put a nut on it and none of the inspections noticed it
BA> was miossing. Fortunately I was doing about five mph in a
BA> parking lot at the time. Had I been in a situation where I
BA> *NEEDED* those brakes I'd be dead.
And quality is 100% a management perogative. As every Japanese
company that has employed American workers has demonstrated. Oh,
and Japanese car factories are unionized also.
