Most of the "name brand" region locked players sold here have
hidden menu options for unlocking. A few have a Macrovision switch too, but
that is much less common. Shops started doing the unlocking if asked to by
customers either at point of sale or afterward, now they unlock them all.
The Chinese players sold in supermarkets etc aren't locked at all. The
Government's view is that the players are legal, they do play Region 4
discs and are thus fit for the purpose for which they were sold. I used to
think that the actual DVDs had to be Region 4 to be legally sold in NZ, but
I notice that Region 2 (and Region 1 NTSC) discs are now for sale in shops
that are large enough to do parallel importing (what you call "grey
market").
It's also easy here to buy multi-voltage, multi-standard TVs, VCRs and DVD
players. Hence my recommendation to George to buy a multi-everything system
in Germany, then either sell it at a handsome profit when returning to the
USA or bring it home. At least buying it in Germany it won't be so far to
go if it needs warranty service...
