| subject: | North Korean Missile Launch |
I was just reading a New York Times article regarding the North Korean missile launch, and once again I was reminded of how much it sickens me to see the way that governments and their propaganda organs, the news agencies, purposely slant the facts, in order to try to manipulate the way that the public thinks. Is it really any different from the way that Winston Smith and his fellow employees constantly revised history and the news so that it would support the agenda of Big Brother in George Orwell's "1984"? I don't think so. For years now, I have told my readers about the hypocrisy which exists in the nuclear club...meaning, of course, the USA, Russia, China, the UK, France, India, Pakistan, Israel, etc. If the USA, or Russia, or China launches a missile into space, nobody makes a big deal about it. In other words, it isn't viewed as a crime or a threat, even though these nations have nuclear arsenals, which together constitute enough destructive power to destroy the entire planet and make it uninhabitable for many years. We all know what the USA did to Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Yet if another nation, such as Iran or North Korea, makes plans and attempts to achieve nuclear status, whether it is for domestic purposes or not, the USA is the first nation to scream and use words like "threat" and "terrorism" and "sanctions" and self-righteously run to the United Nations Security Council. It is as if the USA wants to be the biggest nuclear bully in the yard, and doesn't want to leave room for any other players, as if the USA has acted responsibly with its terrible weapons. The NYT article in question is filled with speculation and obvious distortions. The North Koreans claim that the test was designed to propel a satellite into space. In fact, they made similar attempts in 1998 and 2006, so another test this year does not seem out of place or unusual. In fact, in the very same article, while they are concerned, the South Koreans do confirm that the trajectory of the rocket did match what would be used to launch a satellite into space. The article states: "South Korean officials, after studying the rocketŐs trajectory, said it appeared to have been configured to thrust a satellite into orbit, as the North had claimed." Another interesting point is that South Korea was likewise planning to launch its first satellite into space this month, but the launch was delayed. As a result, the North Koreans beat them to the punch. Now think about this. If South Korea had achieved its objective first and fired its missile into space, do you think that the USA and other nations would be making the same hoopla? Probably not; but because North Korea did it first, oh, it is a veiled threat from those dangerous North Koreans. Can you see my point? Then there is this distortion: "The motivation for the test appeared as much political as technological: After acquiring the fuel for six or more nuclear weapons during the Bush administration, and negotiating a halt of its main nuclear reactor in return for aid, North KoreaŐs recent statements appear to be a bid for attention from the Obama administration." The point regarding North Korea possessing enough plutonium to create six or more nuclear weapons is mere speculation. It has not been concretely proven, and cannot be proven, that North Korea possesses this amount of plutonium. It is a guess-estimate at best; but because it raises the threat level in this article, and instills fear and paranoia, and causes people to view the North Korean satellite launch in a negative light, it has been woven into the article as fact, when it is no such thing. Don't misinterpret my words. I am no big fan of North Korea or Iran, but this is not responsible, or objective, journalism. It is just one more subtle attempt to influence people's world view, and nothing more: "If North Korea is doing it, it must be bad". Maybe so, but you had better provide us with more concrete proof than just mere speculation and twisted truths.
