| subject: | Obama`s Empty Nuclear Speech |
Earlier this evening I was reading a news article in the New York Times, entitled "Obama Seizes on Missile Launch in Seeking Nuclear Cuts", regarding President Obama's speech in Prague, Czech Republic, concerning his efforts to cut back the number of weapons in America's nuclear arsenal, as well as around the world. Following are some excerpts which caught my attention. NY> Mr. Obama said that his administration would "reduce the NY> role of nuclear weapons" in its national security strategy, NY> and would urge other countries to do the same. He pointed to NY> the agreement he reached last week with President Dmitri A. NY> Medvedev of Russia to begin negotiations on reducing NY> warheads and stockpiles, and said the two countries would NY> try to reach an agreement by the end of the year. He also NY> promised to aggressively pursue American ratification of the NY> Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which in the past has faced NY> strong opposition in Congress. NY> It is a strategy based on the idea that if the United States NY> shows it is willing to greatly shrink the size of its atomic NY> arsenal, ban nuclear testing and cut off the worldwide NY> production of bomb material, reluctant allies and partners NY> around the world will be more likely to rewrite nuclear NY> treaties and enforce sanctions against North Korea and Iran. As far as I am concerned, at this point in time, Obama's words are empty, meaningless and insignificant. Why? Because he, like U.S. presidents before him, simply does NOT go far enough. Obama claims that he will "reduce the role of nuclear weapons" in America's national security strategy. Sorry, Mr. Obama, but you are missing a key word in that sentence. Instead of "reduce", it should be "eliminate", or better yet, "totally eliminate". To try to strengthen his position, and to make it appear as if the USA is the faithful leader who is leading the way in reducing the number of nuclear weapons around the world, he then reminds everyone of the agreement he had reached the prior week with Russian president Dmitri A. Medvedev to begin what, reducing nuclear weapons? No! To begin negotiations to discuss reducing their nuclear arsenals. In other words, all they have agreed to thus far is to start talking about it. There is absolutely no substance or action to anything Obama has said thus far. The Israelis and the Palestinians have also been talking for years. Big deal! People still keep dying! Obama does the very same thing when he brings up the ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which the United States has resisted for many years. I have mentioned this issue to my friends many times before. How in the world can the United States Government expect other nations to abide by and respect the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, when one of the biggest nuclear powers in the world won't even ratify it? That isn't exactly setting an example, now is it?! And then Obama goes back to the same blah, blah, blah and talks about, not really eliminating, but simply shrinking America's nuclear arsenal. In his delusion, he seems to think that by making all of these wonderful promises to cut back America's nuclear arsenal sometime in the foggy future, the rest of the world is going to be eager to step up to the plate, and follow suit. And then comes Obama's punch line. After such a "wise" onslaught of eloquent verbiage, Obama is certain that the world will now be ready to join him in implementing more sanctions against North Korea and Iran. Good try Mr. Obama...well, not really. While some people will undoubtedly be praising Mr. Obama for such a wonderful speech, I most certainly will not. The bottom line for me, as it has been for years, is that as long as the United States possesses even one single nuclear weapon, it is an absolute hypocrite, and has no right to tell any other nation on Earth that they cannot possess nuclear technology in any form, whether it is for nuclear weaponry, for the generation of electrical power, or for anything else. And this applies to all of the other members of the Nuclear Club as well. Until they totally dismantle and destroy their nuclear arsenals, they are absolute hypocrites, and shouldn't be trying to dictate to other nations what they can or cannot do, insofar as nuclear development is concerned. To all of you Nuclear Pack members, hear this: Lead by clear example, and then maybe someone will listen. Talk is cheap. Actions are what count. We all already know, or should know, that nukes are bad news for everybody. You Nuclear Pack leaders seem to think that they are just bad for everyone but you! Hypocrites!
