Is it time for Galaxy stories? Here's mine.
I bought a 13" Coulter used a few years ago. It turned out to have a
VERY thin mirror (with wedge). It was 3/4" thick on one side and
5/8" on the other (making it about 1/2" in the center). It was
in a non-floating 6-point cell (that i've since fixed. Did mirrors like
that ever come out of Coulter?
I never could get a decent image out of it at higher power. So when I
came across a 1" thick Coulter mirror re-figured by Galaxy with
signature for $300, I thought my problems were solved. It was better, but
not much. I had been told it was re-figured by Jerry Wilkinson (apparently
before he dropped off the face of the earth). He had re-ground and figured
a 4.5" for me and it was great, so I tended not to believe this. So I
called Galaxy and gave them thier serial number. I was told it may have
been him and that at that time (early '90's), they left them 1/4 to 1/3
wave under-correct on purpose for cooling reasons, blah blah blah...
Eventually I got around to testing it and it was more like 2/3 wave
under-correct. I lived with it for quite a while till I finally decided to
refigure it myself, rather than throw more money at it. So that's what I'm
working on now. It's pretty close. A little over-correct. I'll get it.
I'm trying for least 1/10 wave P-V.
I scribed the word NOT in front of GALAXY OPTICS on the back. It'll
have my signature when I'm done.
