LC> When I was reading and enjoying science fiction in the
LC> 50s my foster mother used to shake her head and say, "I
LC> don't understand how an intelligent girl like you can
LC> believe rubbish like that." Now the "rubbish" has not
LC> only happened, most of it is outdated. (Yes, I know
LC> I'm outdating myself by admitting that, but hey!)
I am an avid Science Fiction fan as well. My first introductions to
computers were through stories. Looking around a home office with fax
machines, computers and telecommuting, I don't think my time reading was
wasted.
LC> The people who work for me are not available for me to
LC> walk in on them and interrupt them. They are working
LC> out of their own homes or offices, many of them in
LC> different Provinces, and even the ones in BC are not in
LC> the same town as I am. All of my instructions,
LC> supervision, corrections, and suggestions are done by
LC> fax, phone, modem, and mail. The owner of the company
LC> has travelled to Toronto, Montreal, Calgary
LC> Calgary, to see these people face to face, but I don't
LC> leave my house. They all know that I keep copies of
LC> every communication to or from them, so there is no
LC> "you didn't tell me that" available to them. I find it
LC> helps keep things running smooth
That sounds intriguing. I find the idea of "virtual companies" very
interesting. Being able to tap talented people regardless of where they live
without the costs of bricks and mortar sounds exciting.
