I think you missed the point. It is more of a concept than a reality of how
the brain functions. It is trying to say basically that we are not our mind
or our body and they are not us; we transcend the physical in different
stages of life and growth and that the physical part of this life is only ONE
part of what makes us us. It's not a physical reality concept but a
spiritual one. Rather hard to grasp sometimes (ever listen to Deepak
Chopra?). WHen I first heard things like this I was very confused and
fluffed it off as ridiculous but I guess it was something I needed to know
cause they kept coming back and back until I finally understood in my own
fashion what the heck they were talking about. Zen itself is more of a
spiritual way of living/thinking; doesn't explain brains, body, blood etc. If
you try and compare our western way of thinking and looking at only what we
think we know as reality to the eastern way of looking at things as holistic
(mind, body, spirit), they will be like oil and water. IF you want to try
and understand, be more open to things that aren't always physical and
concrete.
