Offhand that sounds like the currency sign. If you can view utf8 then this is
what happens here depending on the -f switch in iconv;
echo -e "\xa4" | iconv -f latin1 -t utf8 = ¤
echo -e "\xa4" | iconv -f latin9 -t utf8 = €
echo -e "\xa4" | iconv -f cp437 -t utf8 = ñ
The above is a cheat of inputting just the character in question as opposed to
inputting the entire message text from the original message. Either way I get
the exact same output for the utf8 characters as shown above.
