After posting I remembered that the Apple 3.5" disks were "special".
AFAIK they use variable speed to using a PC drive to read/write Apple
3.5" disks is at least difficult.

My main idea is that if an old PC type 5.25" drive is used it would be
possible to:

1. read/write standard 140K disks. Not very useful as Apple Disk ][
drives are plentiful, at least in this part of the world.

2. read/write 1.2MB HD disks or connect a 3.5" drive for 1.44MB disks.
Convenient for data exchange with a PC.

3. read/write 800K ProDOS volumes on HD media. Not compatible with Apple
3.5" media.

4. Read absolute pulse timing of a (protected) track like EDD board.

Not sure if this list is attractive enough.
