I have only two little things to add....

o The trouble you (Geo) saw with AVG free updates happened for six months
or so as they were getting popular. The paid version was always on an
Akamai (or similar) setup, and updated in a blink. Then they got Intel
money. Then they moved the free version to a distributed setup. It's much
better now.

o I used to use Macafee-commandline under Bart's for clean/delete, but to
tell you the truth, ALL the infections I've seen recently were more on the
order of spy/ad/trojan infectors. I don't think I've had to clean a true
virus for a year (not that it's my career). Oh, F-Prot used to have a
console version that liked LFNs and NTFS, but I haven't used that in a
_couple of years.

Do you use AVG from external media, or try to install it? Is their
commandline version solid? I think I tried it once under WinZip, and had
problems.
