Hallo, Aziz!
AY>Our school has just been assigned a range of ip addresses by some
AY>government authority. The range of addresses is 10.85.113.*, with 1-40 for
AY>network devices, servers etc and 41-254 for assigning to PCs.
This won't fit your needs.
Have a talk to these guys and explain them your network topology.
Otherwise you have to install something like BorderManager that comes with
NAT (Network Address Translation) capabilities.
AY>Now the problem. Our intranetware server has 5 (yes 5) network cards.
You need subnet mask 255.255.255.224. This will generate 8 possible
subnets with 30 valid IP-addresses in each subnet.
Example:
First server NIC will get address 10.85.113.30 (Range is 0-31. 0 is
identifier to the subnet, 31 is broadcast address). Remains address 1-29
for PCs in the Subnet. Their gateway address is 10.85.113.30.
Second server NIC: 10.85.113.62 (Range 32-63. 32 identifies the subnet, 63
is broadcast). Valid addresses for Workstations are 33-61. Gateway? Right:
10.85.113.62
And so on ...
I suggest NOT to use subnet 0 and subnet 224. Why? Because some old hard/
software cannot handle Subnet 0 correctly. And the broadcasts in subnet
224 (which will be addressed to 10.85.113.255) will cause a global
broadcast ... under certain circumstances.
(In most cases everything will run fine even if these subnets are used,
but you don't even need more than 6 subnets.)
AY>How do i (i) assign ip addresses to the 5 cards on the server and
See above: 10.85.113.62 (.94, 126, 158, 190 ... 222 (if needed sometimes))
Don't forget to enable IP-forwarding (configure as router).
AY>(ii) configure DHCP
Don't know: Never had to enable DHCP on NetWare servers.
AY>so that each of the roughly 30 PCs on each segments receives an ip
dress?
29. No more.
AY>It's no problem with 1 card of course, or if i use local addresses, but
he
AY>above has me stumped. NW won't let me bind (say) 10.85.113.11 to one nic
n
AY>the server and 10.85.113.12 to another, saying they're on the same subnet.
They are. Or take subnet mask 255.255.255.254
Ciao, Walter
