What's all this about installing a "high end graphics card". Into what?

I thought (at least in North America) laptops passed desktops in sales
sometime during the past 24 months. Certainly laptops have been standard
issue in my company for several years now (which of course doesn't make it
universally true). And I don't see too many college age students buying
desktops ...
