It's not so much they believed it was universal or anything. It was more the
fact that CP437 supported ANSI graphics. And those graphics have been used
*almost* as long as there have been BBSs for customizing your BBS and making it
look like no other.

* I put "almost" in asterisks because text-only BBSs were obviously around
longer and don't want to get shunned to all hell for not saying it. Once
someone said "hey, I want to be able to add some graphics to my BBS, TheDraw
was born. And well, that was soalmost 30 years ago.

Then again, I'm sure you know this since I believe you said you've used BBS
software (Maximus?) in the past that supported all of that.
