In an article entitled "Big Numbers in Niagara", the local medical officer
of health states that kids are being abused in large numbers.
She then cites some interesting statistics to bolster her claim.
Family and Children's Services handle 2,500 calls per year reporting
abuse claims. Of these 2,500 calls, 400 are passed to the Niagara Regional
Police to investigate along with FACS. She then states that there is an
85% conviction rate for cases that end up in court.
Interestingly enough, she never gives the figures of how many actual cases
of abuse are proven. This is often the way social service agencies prove
their budget demands. By citing worst case scenarios and not using the
actual number of proven complaints, they inflate the magnitude of the
problem and the mainstream media usually goes along with them, never
questioning their statistics.
A point to keep in mind, this press conference comes at a time when the
FACS is handing in to the regional council, their yearly budget request.
