"FAST-TRACK" TRADE BAD FOR GUN OWNERS
The NRA Institute for Legislative Action announced today its
opposition to "fast-track" legislation currently being debated by
Congress and advocated by President Bill Clinton. A bill that
would remove the congressional role currently played by federal
lawmakers, "fast track" would leave virtually all trade agreement
authority in the hands of one person -- in this case, President
Clinton. Hence NRA's opposition to H.R. 2621, the "fast track"
bill, for it expands the President's trade powers.
The gun-owning community is all-too-familiar with the
current administration's record on Second Amendments issues.
Just last week, for instance, the American people learned of
Clinton's plan to implement the "Bigger Clinton Gun Ban," without
congressional consent, banning guns he first approved with the
Clinton Gun Ban of 1994. With a record like that, there should
be no question on Capitol Hill or with the American people that
the Clinton-Gore team will continue to wage its war on gun owners
and act more irresponsibly if Congress grants greater
presidential powers under "fast track" trade authority.
Please call your U.S. Representative TODAY at (202) 224-3121
and tell him to oppose H.R. 2621, the Clinton-backed "fast-
track" trade bill. Remind your congressman that Congress needs
to play an active role in the debate over American trade and that
all authority shouldn't be granted to an already-powerful, and
sometimes abusive, chief executive.
It is better for Congress to retain the power to improve
details of free trade. After all, if America's law-abiding gun
owners are forced to rely on Bill Clinton to represent their
specific concerns in an international trade deal, then the deal
must be off.
