-=> Quoting Ric Johnson to Scott Zolnoski <=-
RJ> They could get back Johnson, Bosio and Junior within a two week period
RJ> this month. And, they have managed to stay close (thanks mostly to my
RJ> beloved Rangers who won two of six from them during the most recent
RJ> weeks). Imagine what they will do when those three get back, if they
RJ> are all really healthy.
Yes, but I'm always leary of teams that rely on home runs to win ballgames.
The Mariners can club teams into submission, but I still don't have too
much faith in the Mariners' rotation. I'd love to see them pick up
another starter...
RJ> I don't think so either. I follow the Royals pretty closely, ( I work
RJ> for a company based in KC, and my boss & I have frequent discussion)
RJ> and I do feel that the groundwork has been laid for the future,
RJ> though. Sometimes, however, I just can't seem to figure Boone out. He
RJ> makes some of the most contrary decisions I have ever seen made. That
RJ> is one of thier problems, I think, lack of consistancy, even from the
RJ> manager. They are young, though. It could be *very* exciting for
RJ> Royals fans in a couple of years.
I agree that the Royals have a bright future, providing that they don't
make any more hair-brained trades! The Royals have had a LONG tradition
of making stupid trades. The one that always sticks out in my mind was
the trade of David Cone to the New York Mets for catcher Ed Hearn! This
trade occured as Mike MacFarlane was on his way up through the minors.
They dumped one of the best pitchers in the game, a player who grew up
in KC and wanted to play for them, for a journeyman catcher who wound
up getting a total of 35 ABs for the Royals (I just looked that up,
in case you're wondering!). I have a real bad feeling about Appier; I
hope the Royals manage to get some good prospects for him, assuming he
gets traded. Incidentally, this trade was engineered by
John Schuerholz (the Braves current GM), who is regarded around baseball
as one of the best in the game. Between the Cone trades and several stupid
free-agent signings (Mark Davis, Storm Davis, Dave Henderson, etc) that
squandered money that could have been much better spent elsewhere, he
sure left the Royals in a mess!
But I agree that players such as Damon, Tucker, Goodwin, and others are
a good nucleus. I just wish they had some young quality pitchers. It
looks like Gubicza is out for the season, and there must be some question
as to how many good years he's got left. Haney isn't bad, and Belcher
is passable, but it seems that they haven't developed a quality starter
since Tom Gordon...
