I have Smokey in a Kimberwicke too. I can ride Smokey in a snaffle if
he is not with a bunch of other horses or he's not out on the cross
country course. It hurts to change the bits so I don't, especially
since I use my seat and legs mainly. There is the added advantage
that if he's in the Kimberwicke I can change to Western by holding the
reins in one hand if I try that in the snaffle Smokey thinks its time
to go stand in the middle of the arena. He KNOWS how much I don't know
about Western reining (I've got to find a teacher to teach me what
Smokey knows about Western reining) and that I have no strength in my
left hand. My Kimberwicke is a low port one also.
