If you meant to say that the first 127 codepoints are all 7-bit corresponding
to the *true* ascii codes then utf-8 does indeed work, along with most 8-bit
codepages. The advantage utf-8 has over ALL 8-bit codepages is that utf-8 can
handle multiple languages within a single document as demontrated by the
message (subject: test 50 utf-8 character wordwrap, MSGID: 1:153/7001.0
55186483) posted in this echo.
