Well you have security through obsolescence.

In the cases I've seen it's usually been the custom software ( hey we lost
the source code )  that has dictated whether one upgrades or not as usually
the new equipment/maintenance fees are less than running on the old
hardware.

There are companies that specialize in used equipment.
