No, they were never the good guys. Novell was a competitor with a majority
market share so Microsoft used every dirty trick in the book, including
predatory pricing, to unhook Novell's customers. IBM used to sell and
support Netware at one time, and I recall several competitive analysis
briefings where Microsoft's strategy was discussed.
