Divx5 does variable frame rate tricks which gives somewhat smoother motion
when the camera does a fast pan across a scene and such, you can see it in
the smooth motion. It really is nice but it's buggy. I have the purchased
version of the codec which allows me to compress in divx5 format and it
won't even work anymore because of the damn copy protection. Really pisses
me off that I gave those morons my money.
You can use the view only version of the codec for free, that seems to work
fine and is what convinced me to pay for the ability to encode in divx5 but
I recommend you stay away from the purchased version as it's nothing but
trouble.
Picture and compression are about the same as divx3, they claim it's
improved but I don't see much if any difference. Slightly less
posterization but nothing really noticable, file size can come out smaller
on movies with little action but on action flicks file size can end up
bigger.
