Seven Deadly Strings
Korn - a lesson with James "Munky" Schaffer & Brian "Head" Welch
"Various"
"As soon as I saw am Ibanez seven-string guitar, I just had to
have one," says James. "I knew that having that extra low string would
open up a shitload of possibilities."
"We use all seven strings a lot, (using) open, ringing chords
and a lot of notes on the high E . . . . we've always wanted that heavy,
aggressive sound . ."
An example of this is the intro to "Life Is Peachy" 's, (LiP),
"Good God" See Example 1

"HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM . . . . . ."
Unfortunately most of us (inc me !!) do not have a seven string
guitar, so here are some alternatives (specifically for Korn) :
1) Tune your guitar down a perfect fourth ( lo hi - B E A D F# B). This is a
cool tuning . . . if you are into Morbid Angel, but for me, well, it is just
too extreme - it will transform everything you play (even James Taylor)
into death metal! Also, tuning down like this requires that you use a
higher guitar string gauge, and probably need to adjust the truss rod and
intonation . . . . . bleeach !!!
2) Leave your guitar tuned normally, and play any Korn stuff an octave
higher than what they do. With this you can pedal the open A string
whenever the extra string is pounded ( remembering that they tune down a
whole step) "I Need" (Korn) can be played like this as shown in example 2.
3) Use drop D tuning ( lo hi - D A D G B E). Especially check out a
tab for "Blind" (Korn) coming from me, soon to a newsgroup near you.
Feel free to put your boot up my arse and tell me to hurry up with it
already !!!
4) Tune each string down a whole step ( lo hi - D G C F A C), and then just
face the fact that you do not have that extra low string, and will have
to adapt accordingly by using inverted power chords and/or playing
the very lowest notes an octave higher when necassary. I will also be
adding a tab to this one very soon, so once again, pound that shoe on my
arse to wake me up !!!!
The rest of this lesson will be based around option number 4, to
de-tune all strings by one whole step.
Let's get on with it . . . . . . . . !!!!
The three main intervals that are the most disturbing to the human
ear are the 'minor second' (two notes, a half step apart) ; 'tritone'
(three whole steps apart), and the 'major seventh' (octave mius a half step).
Finger nails down the blackboard although very high in this category, is not
an interval (hey, don't let that stop ya !!). As to be expected Korn uses
these three intervals frequently.
The minor second
Here is a diagram (see example 3) of a minor second diad (two note chord),
