~Touch Of Evil~ yanked -- Orson Welle's classic movie has
been restored, and the restored version was all set to make its
debut at Cannes when it was yanked. Universal's "October Films"
division spent months "reworking and re-editing" ~Touch Of Evil~,
basing their work on 58 pages of notes left by Welles. Editor
Walter Murch, producer Rick Schmidlin and Welles scholar Jonathan
Rosenbaum followed Welles notes to the letter, fixing the film the
way they think Welles would have wanted it... but at the last minute,
Cannes was forced to drop the "rework" when Beatrice Welles (Orson's
daughter) threatened Universal with a lawsuit, saying that the original
version is the only authorized version, and that the "altered version"
may not be shown without her consent (which she isn't giving, obviously).
Universal said "the claims of Ms. Welles are unfounded and [Universal]
will assert all of its legal rights in this matter."
Scarlett O'Hara goes Web-wide -- New Line Cinema is
rereleasing the movie ~Gone With The Wind~ this summer; they're
showing the original Technicolor prints, which haven't been seen for
35 years. New Line has set up a web site at (what else)
        http://www.franklymydear.com
and has started a contest... visitors can vote for an entire new cast
for the movie, as well as the crew... you can even vote to rewrite
several of the famous scenes, including the burning of Atlanta and
"I'll never go hungry again!". Each week New Line will select what
they consider to be the best entry, and create a mock movie poster
showing the changes, to be posted on the site for that week.
The winner of the contest will win a trip to Atlanta, complete
with a stop at the Margaret Mitchell Museum. The contest runs from
May 29th to August 1st.
Julia Louis Dreyfuss as Scarlett, anyone?
