I've gone through about 4 ThinkPads now, abused them all over the world
including several non-trivial tumbles onto the floor, and all have lived to
tell the tale without breaking. However until recently my employer
manufactured ThinkPads, so I'm not unbiased ...

BTW while this concern may not apply to you (Ellen) but IMHO Dell makes
some of the ugliest boxes ever manufactured. A couple of years ago I
explained the pros and cons of PowerBook vs Dell vs ThinkPad to a
non-technical female friend. She bought the Dell, mostly on price. She
regretted it on the basis of appearance the second it arrived at her home,
and she wished she had spent the extra money for the Apple.
