| subject: | USR-PCI `Boot` prompt |
On or about: 07-15-06 18:29, Russell Tiedt did engage James Bradley regarding, but not limited to: USR-PCI "Boot>" prompt JB> I'll say. You can expect it waking up in a data mode now and again, JB> but even the other ati#s look bunked too. JB> I wonder if a lightning stike made it through, just enough to scramble JB> a few of the right bytes. I'll shelf it for now, and hopefully flash JB> it in a controlled way when it returns to service. RT> Well it could be a lighting strike, something similar happened to my RT> original 28800 USR Sportster a few years back ... A friend bought a new computer, (Retail, of all things.) for which I bought an el'cheapo power bar for them. One spring, all their neighbours phone equipment was fried, and so was the modem terminal on the power bar, but their new 'puter remained safe. It's so nice when a $40 IC doesn't protect a three-cent fuse. Come to think about it, we did have a few lightshows around the time mine went dumb. My AC is all on UPSes or rather good power bars, but I may have circumvented the phone line, in order to reach a device, or to avoid me from finding another cable... ...
